The company's history is familiar to many Tampa area residents and business people. In the 1920's, current owner Wesley  C. Creighton's grandfather moved his family from the Grand Cayman Islands.

The elder Creighton was a seafaring captain hauling gold and other valuables for the Queen of England. It was a difficult life for a family man, requiring him to be away from home months at a time. Captain Creighton yearned to spend every day with his family and, in a bold move, sailed for Tampa to establish a land based business that used his vast "sea faring" knowledge. He founded "Creighton Sail Off", a custom sail making business.

By 1941 this business had evolved into Creighton Brothers Awning Company, consisting of three brothers, one being Wesley's father, Rupert. In 1963 Wesley started working with his father and uncles learning the family business. In the early 1980's, Wesley became sole owner of Creighton Brothers Awning Company, which he actively manages today.

Creighton Brothers' custom awnings and canopies can be seen throughout Hillsborough County. Company accounts include sports stadiums, arenas, the zoo, schools, and a variety of other commercial businesses. Recently an auto dealership ordered awnings for their  windows facing east and west  to cool the inside of the building which was too hot for  employees and customers. An amusement park orders overhead shades which are a more open version of a canopy. Any business with high customer traffic can benefit from protecting their customers from sun or rain.
